The Art of Living Well: When the Teacher Is Within

This morning, as I finished my meditation, a beautiful mantra by Deva Premal—“Mere Gurudev” (“My Beloved Teacher”)—began playing. I paused for a moment and simply listened.

The title itself stirred something in me.

In Sanskrit, Guru doesn’t simply mean someone who stands at the front of a classroom. A true guru is one who removes darkness and helps us remember the light that has always been there.

That reminded me of something I’ve been learning over and over again this year.

For much of my life, I believed I needed one more certification, one more class, one more book, one more teacher before I would be ready.

Ready to teach.
Ready to coach.
Ready to lead.

There is certainly value in lifelong learning—I treasure it. My experiences through Osher Lifelong Learning, my yoga teacher training at Lila Yoga Studio, and my current David G Meditation Teacher Training have each deepened my understanding in meaningful ways.

But eventually, there comes a point when preparation must become practice.

There comes a moment when we stop asking,

“Am I ready?”

and begin asking,

“How can I serve?”

That shift changes everything.

The teacher we are seeking has quietly been growing inside us all along—not because we know everything, but because we have lived enough, loved enough, healed enough, and remained curious enough to offer something genuine.

I don’t aspire to have all the answers.

I simply hope to create spaces where people can breathe a little more deeply, listen more carefully to themselves, and remember that they already possess more wisdom than they often realize.

Perhaps that’s the real purpose of every teacher.

Not to give us answers.

But to help us hear our own.

Today, I invite you to ask yourself one simple question:

If you fully trusted the wisdom already growing within you, what would you do differently today?

You may discover that the next step has been waiting patiently for you all along.

With love and gratitude,
